Abstract
A new inverse emulsion polymerization process was developed to synthesize po1yvinylpyrrolidone. Development of the process was emphasized on obtaining maximum molecular weight varying reaction conditions in terms of reaction temperature, reaction time, initiator, emulsifier, and reducing agent. Two redox systems were tested and molecular weight was measured by intrinsic viscosity and the Mark- Houwink equation. Reducing agent NaHSO2·CH2O gave higher molecular weight than NaHSO3 at 30℃ reaction temperature and 2.5 hrs. reaction time. Existence of maximum molecular weight in concentrations of initiator, emulsifier, and reducing agent implies that PVP polymerization does not follow the ideal emulsion polymerization mechanism.
